There’s more to the world of NFTs than the Bored Ape Yacht Club.

(NOTE: An abridged version of this interview/essay was originally published in Maine Art Scene) The traditional art gallery model that has served plein air painters, mixed media artists, and fine art photographers for generations still reigns supreme in Maine; but change is in the wind. I’ll be the first to…

August Wanes

August wanes. Tucked among skyline branches and the wild tangles of roadside ditch thickets are patches of prescient leaves bold enough to prophesy impending end times. The last days of the deciduous. Foliage dries. Flower petals wither. The colors of nature shift until earthy new hues inhabit the hazy evening…

A Puddle Full Of Autumn

I stare deep into a puddle full of autumn and feel her gazing back at me. There she is. Floating just above the cracked pavement. Drawn in glistening sunlight on the surface of fresh-fallen rainwater. …

‘Always try to see life around ya as if you’d just come out of a tunnel.’

This is how it is everyday. Eyes open against pillow. I feel like I’m always waking up. I twist my neck to check the digital clock. It’s too early or too late. I’m either awake and ready for more sleep, or sluggish and slept too long. Dry mouth. Consciousness fights…

Waiting for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade

I remember that morning, heading out before sunrise into the bitterly freezing morning city streets with my wife — to set up and stake our claim to a prime vantage point from which to watch the parade. As the sun finally appeared, it rose in Manhattanhenge style, aligned perfectly with…

Creativity in the Face of Impermanence

Pine Island in Southwest Florida. One of those rare places where the wildness is still defiant. Where elemental forces thwart development. Vegetation, fire, rot and rust continually conspire to reclaim the natural landscape from civilization. Every so often, a mindful passerby is blessed to witness the uncommon beauty of the in-between state, our throwaway culture crumbling and human impermanence revealed. A glorious role reversal with the violent patience of weather, moisture and fecundity exhibiting triumph over engineering, architecture and commerce.

Boone Hall Plantation Slave Cabins

Boone Hall Plantation is in South Carolina’s Lowcountry. Most of you have seen the Avenue of antebellum live oaks leading up to the plantation house — they’re some of the most photographed trees in America, long-lived southern icons. Fewer of you have seen these dwellings, just a few feet away…
